Sarawak to Modernise Building Ordinance with Green Index and EV Charger Provisions

KUCHING, Jan 21: Sarawak is set to update its Building Ordinance by November 2025 to include progressive measures such as the Green Building Index (GBI), provisions for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and improved fire safety standards. These amendments are part of a wider effort to enhance sustainability and safety for both new and existing buildings across the state.

The amendments will ensure that older and historical buildings also comply with the enhanced guidelines, particularly fire safety measures recommended by Bomba. Dr Sim assured building owners that they would be granted a grace period to meet the new regulations.

“Don’t worry—we’re accommodating and will allow sufficient time for building owners to comply with these updated guidelines,” he said.

He emphasised that the amendments aim to create uniform safety standards across Sarawak, reflecting the state’s commitment to sustainability and public safety.

“Fire doesn’t discriminate—it burns without regard for anyone. It’s time for our building ordinance to keep up with current demands,” Dr Sim added.
