KUCHING, Feb 8 – Sarawak is all set to make aviation history on February 12 by signing the Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) for the acquisition of MASwings airline. This major move will mark a significant milestone in Sarawak’s journey toward having its very own airline.

The announcement was made by Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, during the Borneo Cross Border Cycling Tour 2025 dinner at Grand Margherita Hotel.

He revealed that the number of flights between Kuching and Jakarta has already increased from three times a week to daily, with an impressive over 80% passenger load on each flight. Once Sarawak establishes its own airline, connectivity is expected to expand even further.

“God willing, on February 12, Sarawak will officially take over MASwings, giving us our own airline,” Abdul Karim shared.

Next Steps After the Acquisition

Speaking to reporters after the event, Abdul Karim noted that while the airline currently has only a small fleet, changes such as rebranding and expanding operations are in the pipeline. Decisions on these developments will be made by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“This is his ‘baby.’ After the signing, we can decide on the destinations we want to focus on,” he said.

The minister emphasized that the new airline is not about cutting ties with Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah but strengthening connections within Southeast Asia and beyond.

“The Sarawak Premier often talks about cities in Korea, Japan, Thailand, the Middle East, and Europe. This will take time as we also plan to build a new airport to support our expansion,” he explained.

Boost for Tourism and Sports

As the tourism minister, Abdul Karim expressed excitement, highlighting the benefits of Sarawak having control over its flight routes and promotions. He also envisions the airline becoming a key partner for promoting international sports events in Sarawak.

“This will certainly help boost tourist arrivals and position Sarawak as a key destination in the region,” he concluded.
