Sarawak to Strengthen Ties with China Through Collaboration and Innovation

KUCHING (Dec 19): Sarawak is steadfast in its mission to foster closer ties with China, emphasising stronger collaboration and innovative initiatives for mutual growth, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In a statement presented by Sarawak Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, during the Malaysia (Sarawak)-China Cooperation Forum and Friendship Cities Roundtable Meeting, the Premier highlighted Sarawak’s unique position in driving this partnership.

Strategic Opportunities for Malaysia-China Collaboration

Sarawak’s strategic location, rich biodiversity, and focus on green energy create significant opportunities to enhance ties with China. Premier Abang Johari noted the state’s wealth of natural resources, including its globally recognised rainforests, which offer potential for eco-tourism and sustainable research.

“Our ecological assets provide avenues for research and development in sustainable practices. Meanwhile, our diversified economy, encompassing agriculture, manufacturing, and services, makes us a key player in Malaysia-China cooperation,” he stated.

Advancing the Digital and Green Economy

Sarawak’s rapid strides in the digital economy also take centre stage in the collaboration, with efforts underway to establish the state as a hub for innovation and technology. Joint ventures in infrastructure, educational exchanges, and life sciences research were identified as key focus areas.

“We aim to create a sustainable and prosperous future through enhanced trade relations, cultural exchanges, and strengthened educational partnerships. By leveraging our strengths and working collaboratively, Sarawak and China can achieve extraordinary outcomes,” he added.

Distinguished Attendees

The event was graced by notable figures, including Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, and DBKU Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman.
