CHINA – Sarawak is expanding its global footprint through a high-level technical working visit to China, aimed at exploring strategic partnerships in the utilities and space sectors.

Led by Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUTS), Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, the Sarawak delegation is currently conducting a five-day mission from 14 to 18 July to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hainan.

According to a statement from MUTS, the visit focuses on strengthening collaboration, identifying innovative technologies, and gaining insights into international best practices in water, electricity, telecommunications, and the space industry.

Key sites visited include the Nansha Huangge Smart Water Treatment Plant and Lijiao Sewerage Water Treatment Plant in Guangzhou — both recognised as leading-edge facilities in smart water management and environmental sustainability.

The itinerary also includes strategic stops at Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station and Wenchang International Aerospace City, along with engagement sessions with China National Space Administration (CNSA) and local government officials.

“This technical working visit is part of our ministry’s commitment to embracing global innovation. We are exploring advanced technologies, capacity building, and potential pilot projects that can enhance Sarawak’s service delivery and accelerate transformation,” said Dato Sri Julaihi.

Among the key topics of discussion are smart water system automation, sustainable energy storage, digitalisation of public utilities, and Sarawak’s emerging interest in the space industry.

The Sarawak delegation includes Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang, Deputy Minister for Utility (Energy and PETROS), Dato Ibrahim Baki, Sarawak Financial Secretary, Dato Sri Dr. Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, and MUTS Permanent Secretary, Datu Jafri Lias.

Also participating are senior officials from JBALB, SCSDU, Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), SEB Power, and other relevant agencies.

Dato Sri Julaihi conveyed Sarawak’s eagerness to deepen cooperation through technical exchanges and joint ventures with Chinese counterparts, especially in scaling innovation and upgrading utility infrastructure.
