KUCHING – The Sarawak Women’s Day (Federal Level) Borneo Zone celebration kicked off this morning at UCSI Hotel, Kuching, bringing together influential women leaders and activists to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for equality.
One of the key figures at the event was Manjeet Sidhu, President of PPIS (NGO) and Chartered President of Lions Club Kuching Unity Majlis Persosialan Sarawak. Sharing her passion for community service, Manjeet highlighted the importance of inclusivity in her work.
“I have always served the community without seeing gender, race, or religion as a barrier. It’s a passion I’ve had since I was young, and it feels good to be able to serve humanity,” said Manjeet.
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year to honor women’s contributions in various fields while raising awareness about the challenges they face. In Malaysia, the celebration often includes seminars, workshops, and campaigns aimed at recognizing women’s achievements and promoting gender-inclusive policies in education, the economy, and leadership roles.
Women are increasingly holding high-ranking positions in politics, business, academia, and NGOs, contributing significantly to policy-making and economic growth. However, challenges remain:
- Gender Bias & Stereotypes – Assertive women are often seen as aggressive rather than strong leaders.
- Work-Life Balance – Many women juggle demanding careers with family responsibilities, sometimes facing discrimination at work.
- Glass Ceiling Effect – Systemic barriers continue to block women from top leadership roles.
- Lack of Mentorship – Women have fewer opportunities for mentorship and sponsorship compared to men.
- Pay Gap – Despite equal qualifications, women often face wage disparities and slower promotions.
Efforts to empower more women in leadership include:
- Implementing gender diversity policies in leadership roles.
- Encouraging mentorship and networking for aspiring female leaders.
- Addressing pay gaps and promoting transparent promotion criteria.
- Offering flexible work policies to support working mothers.
- Advocating for gender equality through education and awareness campaigns.
Today’s event was a reminder of the significant progress women have made and the ongoing need for inclusivity and equality in all sectors. As Manjeet Sidhu noted, it’s about breaking barriers and serving humanity with passion and purpose.
