KUCHING – The true spirit of unity in Sarawak was clearly seen during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration held at Kampong Paya Mebi in N13 Batu Kitang. The event brought together people of different races and religions, reflecting the unique harmony that the state is well known for.
The celebration was attended by Batu Kitang assemblyman, Lo Khere Chiang, who joined residents in marking the festive occasion. He shared to Sarawak Daily, the gathering as a strong example of Sarawak’s peaceful and inclusive society. He noted that although Hari Raya is a Muslim celebration, the presence of various communities at the event showed how deeply unity is rooted in the state’s culture.
One of the highlights of the celebration was a lion dance performance, usually associated with Chinese New Year. What made it special was the diversity of the performers. The group consisted of youths from different backgrounds, including Chinese, Malays, Iban and other Dayak communities. Their joint effort in preparing and performing the lion dance during Hari Raya demonstrated how cultural traditions in Sarawak are shared and appreciated across ethnic lines.
Lo said such scenes reflect the broader values practised in Sarawak, where mutual respect and understanding remain strong. He also expressed appreciation for the leadership of the Premier of Sarawak, Abang Johari Openg, who has consistently emphasised inclusivity and equal opportunities for all citizens regardless of race or religion.
He pointed out that initiatives such as support for houses of worship through Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) and the state’s move towards providing free tertiary education for Sarawakian students reflect the government’s commitment to fairness and social stability.
Residents who attended the open house expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate together in a peaceful environment. Many described the event as more than just a festive gathering, but a reminder of the importance of maintaining harmony in a multi-racial society.
The celebration at Kampong Paya Mebi once again highlighted why Sarawak is often regarded as a model of unity in Malaysia. In a time when unity is increasingly important, such events serve as a strong reminder that peace and cooperation must be continuously nurtured for the benefit of future generations.
