Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, outlined this vision at the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 4.0) held today at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

He stressed that while Sarawak is rich in hydropower, solar energy, and biomass, the true value of these resources lies in pairing them with technology and people. “Our natural resources provide the foundation, but it is technology that will transform this foundation into high-value, sustainable economic products,” he said.

The Premier explained that the state is positioning itself as a global contributor in climate change mitigation by leveraging its resources to develop nature-based solutions. He pointed out that the transition away from fossil fuels is one of the world’s greatest energy challenges, and Sarawak is ready to be part of the solution.

He further highlighted the importance of human capital in this transformation. “Technological adoption alone is insufficient without a capable workforce to deploy, adapt, and improve these systems,” he said. To achieve this, the state government will continue investing in education, especially STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), ensuring Sarawakians are fully equipped to lead in green hydrogen, carbon capture, and other climate-focused projects.

“This is not only about building a workforce but about empowering Sarawakians to become beneficiaries of the green economy,” he said, reaffirming the state’s commitment to fully funded STEM education.

The Premier was joined at the event by Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, as well as regional and international dignitaries including British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ajay Sharma and senior representatives from Brunei Darussalam and Cambodia.
