SARIEKI – Significant infrastructure upgrades are slated for rural communities across the Sarikei Parliament constituency under the 2025 People-Friendly Project initiative. Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii confirmed concrete road improvements, pedestrian platform installations, and longhouse courtyard enhancements during a site inspection tour on Monday.

Nine key locations have been prioritized for road upgrades including Arak Sulai Jalan, Christopher Berai Jalan, Sing Ling Jalan in Sungai Meramat, Hashim Road, Yii Ung King Road, Sheng En Road in Sungai Mador, Ulu Meradong Road in Bakong, and Tak Sing Lama Road in KJD. Additionally, Kampung Darul Falah and Sungai Gemuan will receive new pedestrian platforms, while Rumah Panjang Liman Ubak in Sungai Kesa will have its courtyard area concretized.

“This comprehensive survey ensures projects directly address community needs,” stated Huang, emphasizing his commitment to narrowing the rural-urban development gap. “As representatives, we must ensure no village or longhouse is left behind in Sarawak’s progress.”

The deputy minister personally submitted project applications to the Sarawak State Development Office, targeting improved mobility and living standards. He noted the upgrades would provide “urban-comparable amenities” to remote areas, particularly benefiting longhouse communities that form the cultural backbone of the region.

Huang expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the planning phase, reaffirming the government’s dedication to grassroots welfare. The 2025 initiative continues Sarawak’s strategic focus on equitable infrastructure development, with concrete roads replacing dirt paths to enhance year-round accessibility during monsoon seasons. Site preparations are expected to commence in Q1 2025 following final approvals.
