SARIKEI – Sarikei is now set to play a bigger role in Sarawak’s economy following the launch of the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA), which will act as a catalyst in driving growth across the Rajang Delta area.
The Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, said RADDA was created to coordinate development efforts more strategically and effectively, focusing on Sarikei and surrounding districts such as Tanjung Manis.
According to him, RADDA will prioritise resource-based industries, modern ports, and tourism development. These efforts, he said, will boost the competitiveness of the Rajang Delta, create jobs, raise living standards, and position Sarikei as a new economic hub for Sarawak.
“This initiative will open up more opportunities, enhance the people’s livelihood, and make this region one of Sarawak’s key growth centres,” he said during the Sarawak-level National Day 2025 Celebration Assembly at the Sarikei Civic Hall today.
The event was officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi.
Abang Johari also highlighted the success of a pilot rice cultivation project in Tanjung Manis, a collaboration between local landowners and the private sector. The Premier expressed confidence that Sarawak is on track to become Malaysia’s leading rice producer by 2030.
He explained that Tanjung Manis is now a logistics gateway for the region with its complete facilities, including an airport, a port, and infrastructure for the deep-sea fishing industry. This positions Sarikei as a potential food production hub to meet both local and international demand.
The Premier also introduced the Tanjung Manis Economic Growth Area (T-MEGA), a development plan that integrates agro-industry, logistics, tourism, and green technology. He said Sarikei and neighbouring districts like Betong, Mukah, and Tanjung Manis have the potential to serve as Sarawak’s “food basket.”
To support this vision, the state government has already developed an Agropark in Sarikei and is investing in better infrastructure, including integrated roads and bridges, to enhance connectivity and strengthen logistics for agricultural distribution.
“With RADDA and T-MEGA working together, Sarikei will grow rapidly, creating more jobs, stimulating economic activities, and improving community well-being. This region will not only strengthen Sarawak’s position as Malaysia’s top food producer but also play a key role in the global food supply chain,” he said.
