Sarikei Fishermen Trained on PLB and GPS Safety Tools

SARIKEI – The Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department has conducted a practical training session on the use of Personal Locator Beacons (PLB) and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices for fishermen in Sarikei.

The demonstration, held on 26 February 2025 at the Sarikei District Marine Fisheries Office, was organised by the Fisheries Technology Development Centre in Santubong.

The programme was designed to provide fishermen with hands-on exposure to essential safety and navigation equipment.

Through detailed explanations and live demonstrations, participants learned how PLBs can be activated during emergencies at sea to transmit distress signals and pinpoint their location for rescue teams.

In addition, the session highlighted the importance of GPS in determining fishing routes, identifying coordinates, and ensuring accurate navigation.

Trainers explained how GPS technology can help fishermen avoid losing direction and improve efficiency in locating fishing grounds.

The initiative reflects the department’s commitment to enhancing safety standards among the fishing community.

By equipping fishermen with knowledge of modern technology, authorities aim to reduce risks associated with maritime activities and ensure quicker assistance in emergencies.

The event concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, officiated by the Head of the Sarikei Marine Fisheries District.

Certificates were awarded to participants as recognition of their involvement and commitment to adopting safer practices at sea.

Officials emphasised that the use of PLB and GPS is not only about compliance but also about safeguarding lives.

With unpredictable weather and challenging sea conditions, these tools are seen as vital for improving survival chances and ensuring sustainable fishing operations.

The Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department has been actively promoting safety awareness programmes across the state.

Similar initiatives have been introduced in other districts, focusing on equipping fishermen with practical skills and knowledge to adapt to modern fishing practices.

For Sarikei’s fishing community, the training marks a significant step towards safer operations. By integrating technology into daily activities, fishermen are better prepared to face emergencies and contribute to a more resilient maritime sector.
