SKRANG – A search and rescue operation has been launched to locate an elderly man who was reported missing after failing to return home from a trip earlier this week.
The missing individual, Igoh Anak Sengaling, aged 84, was last seen on the morning of 18 February. According to initial reports, he had left his longhouse at Rumah Panjang Tebarong in Skrang at around 7am, intending to visit a nearby health clinic.
Authorities believe that after his visit, he may have proceeded to a forested area in Baloi, where he was thought to be setting up a snare. However, he did not return home, prompting concern among family members and villagers.
A report regarding his disappearance was received at approximately 7.55pm on 19 February. In response, personnel from the Civil Defence Force (APM) mobilised quickly. Teams from Lubok Antu and Betong were deployed to assist in the search effort.
The operation officially commenced early on 20 February, with rescue teams arriving at the location around 8am. A briefing was conducted by the police before search activities began, focusing on the area where the man was last believed to have been seen.
The search operation involves multiple agencies working in coordination, including the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force, and members of the local community. Villagers familiar with the terrain have joined efforts, providing valuable support in navigating the dense forest surroundings.
Search and rescue missions in rural parts of Sarawak can be particularly challenging due to the rugged landscape and thick vegetation. Limited accessibility and unpredictable weather conditions often complicate such operations, requiring coordinated teamwork and careful planning.
Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities and continue to expand the search radius as the operation progresses. Efforts are being concentrated on both forested zones and nearby areas where the missing man could have travelled.
Officials have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in locating the elderly man. They also reminded residents to take precautionary measures when venturing into remote areas, especially alone.
As of the latest update, the operation remains ongoing, with teams continuing their search efforts throughout the area.
Emergency services have reiterated that assistance is available for urgent situations, encouraging the public to contact the relevant authorities in case of emergencies.
