LUNDU – The completion of the drainage system upgrade in Kampung Sebandi Hilir has brought immediate improvements to the local environment, easing water flow and reducing risks of flooding.
The RM100,000 project, carried out under the Opar constituency’s Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), was officially handed over on Monday.
Opar State Assemblyman (ADUN) Billy Sujang expressed gratitude to the Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) and all stakeholders for ensuring the project was delivered on schedule and in line with community needs. He urged residents to maintain the new facilities and continue supporting local development initiatives.
“I hope that the residents will take care of the facilities provided and continue to cooperate for local development,” he said during the handover ceremony.
Billy highlighted the Sarawak Government’s commitment to implementing small-scale but high-impact projects that directly benefit rural communities. He noted that such initiatives are crucial in improving living standards and addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges.
At the same event, JPS also handed over the site for the Kampung Sebigo Cina Drainage System Upgrade Project, valued at RM50,000. Work on this project will begin immediately, aiming to expand drainage capacity and reduce the risk of flash floods in residential areas.
Local leaders emphasised that these projects form part of a broader effort to strengthen rural infrastructure across Sarawak.
Drainage upgrades are particularly important in flood-prone districts like Lundu, where seasonal rains often disrupt daily life. By improving water management systems, authorities hope to create safer and more resilient communities.
Residents welcomed the improvements, noting that the upgraded system has already made a visible difference in maintaining a cleaner and more orderly environment. The initiative is expected to contribute to long-term sustainability by reducing maintenance costs and preventing damage to homes and roads during heavy rainfall.
The Rural Transformation Programme continues to be a key driver of development in Sarawak, focusing on projects that directly address community needs.
With the completion of the Kampung Sebandi Hilir upgrade and the launch of the Kampung Sebigo Cina project, officials reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring rural areas receive the infrastructure support necessary for growth and resilience.
