Sebuyau Senior Exercise Programme Promotes Health and Community Unity

SEBUYAU – The Active Senior Citizens Exercise Programme 2025 in Sebuyau District drew strong participation from elderly residents, reinforcing both healthy living and community spirit across the Samarahan Division.

The initiative, held at divisional level, was designed to encourage senior citizens to maintain their physical and mental well-being through light aerobic routines and social interaction. Trainers led the morning session with simple yet effective exercises, accompanied by lively music that created a cheerful and motivating atmosphere.

Organisers highlighted that the programme aligns with the National Ageing Initiative 2030, which seeks to ensure that Malaysia’s ageing population remains active, independent and socially engaged. With the country projected to become an ageing nation by 2030, such activities are increasingly vital in promoting wellness and reducing health risks among older adults.

Beyond health benefits, the programme also supports the government’s efforts to raise the Malaysian Sports Culture Index (MSCI), which measures the extent of sports and recreational participation nationwide. By providing equal opportunities for all age groups, the event contributes to Malaysia’s broader vision of becoming a “Sporting Nation” by 2025.

The highlight of the Sebuyau session was a lucky draw, where several participants received prizes as tokens of appreciation. This gesture added excitement to the event and reflected the organisers’ commitment to recognising the contributions of senior citizens.

According to the organisers, the programme was not only about exercise but also about strengthening friendships and fostering harmony within the community. By bringing together residents from different backgrounds, the event reinforced the importance of unity and mutual support in maintaining a vibrant society.

Experts note that regular exercise among older adults can significantly improve cardiovascular health, enhance mobility, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. It also plays a crucial role in maintaining mental health, reducing stress, and preventing social isolation. Similar evidence-based programmes worldwide have shown that group exercise sessions for seniors help build resilience and prolong independence.

The success of the Sebuyau event demonstrates the growing recognition of senior citizens as an integral part of community development. By combining fitness, recreation and social bonding, the Active Senior Citizens Exercise Programme 2025 has set a positive example for other districts in Sarawak to emulate.

As Malaysia prepares for the demographic shift towards an ageing society, initiatives like this will remain central to ensuring that the elderly population continues to thrive, contributing not only to their own well-being but also to the strength and unity of the wider community.
