Traditional Massage Course in Sebuyau Creates Pathways for Income Generation

SEBUYAU – A Traditional Massage Course held at the Kampung Tebelu Community Hall has opened new opportunities for local participants to enhance their skills and generate income through traditional wellness practices.

The programme, organised with the support of Goonong SPA, attracted 30 participants on its opening day. Instructor Sarawati Mardiana Buang praised the strong commitment shown, noting that many attendees expressed deep interest in learning the techniques more thoroughly.

“Most of the participants showed willingness to explore the skills in greater depth, proving the potential of this course as a platform to expand knowledge and create new sources of income,” she said.

The first day of training included a briefing on the history and concept of traditional massage, followed by hands-on practice with certified instructors.

Participants were introduced to basic techniques such as back, hand and shoulder massage, alongside lessons on pressure points that improve blood circulation and relieve muscle tension. These foundational skills are expected to help participants develop services that can be offered professionally.

The course continues with extended sessions covering specialised massage techniques and practical strengthening exercises.

The programme will conclude with an official closing ceremony, expected to be officiated by Mohamad Shafizan Kepli, Member of Parliament for Batang Lupar.

Traditional massage, long valued in Sarawak’s communities for its therapeutic benefits, is increasingly recognised as a viable source of livelihood.

By equipping participants with structured training, the course aims to empower individuals to pursue entrepreneurship in wellness services, while preserving cultural practices.

Local leaders have highlighted the importance of such initiatives in supporting rural communities, providing them with practical skills that can be monetised.

The growing demand for wellness and relaxation services across Sarawak further strengthens the relevance of traditional massage as both a cultural heritage and an economic opportunity.

The enthusiastic response from participants reflects the potential of community-based training programmes to uplift livelihoods, while reinforcing the value of traditional knowledge in modern contexts.
