Segu Bunuk Women Urged to Embrace Change and Seize New Opportunities

KUCHING – Women in Kampung Segu Bunuk have been encouraged to adopt new ways of thinking, embrace modern opportunities, and play a greater role in Sarawak’s development journey towards becoming a high-income state.

The call was made by Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Deputy Minister of Transport (Air and Roads) and Member of the Mambong State Legislative Assembly (ADUN), during the 2026 New Year Friendly Ceremony organised by the Segu Bunuk Village Women’s Affairs Bureau. The event, held for the first time in a hotel, symbolised the community’s openness to change and reform.

Dr Jerip highlighted that women are central to both family well-being and community progress. “Changing the way of thinking and willingness to adapt to current trends is very important to improve family well-being and village development. Women play a big role not only in managing the family, but also contribute to the community economy and social development,” he said.

He emphasised the need of solidarity among the village’s communities, stating that collective spirit and dedication are essential for sustainable growth. The Women’s Affairs Bureau, he continued, remains a driving force at the grassroots level, encouraging women to lead programs that benefit the entire community.

Dr Jerip also urged women to harness technology and modern approaches in daily life and economic activities. This, he explained, would ensure they remain competitive and relevant, aligning with the Sarawak Government’s target of achieving a household income of at least RM14,000 per month.

In a significant announcement, he revealed that the area will be recognised as the Sarawak Delta Geopark starting in June. The designation is expected to open up major opportunities in tourism, particularly for small and medium enterprises, local product development, and tourism support services.

To further strengthen the bureau’s initiatives, Dr Jerip approved a Special Grant Project (MRP) worth RM30,000. The allocation will support the implementation of community programmes and activities aimed at empowering women and enhancing village development.

The ceremony underscored the growing role of women in shaping Sarawak’s future, with leaders calling for proactive participation and adaptability to ensure that communities thrive in line with the state’s aspirations.
