Having served nearly a decade as Chairman, Sempurai described the reappointment as both an honour and a significant responsibility.

He emphasised that his leadership reflects a collective effort, crediting the council members and staff for past achievements.

“This is a chance for me, and for the entire council, to move forward together,” Sempurai said. “We could not have achieved what we did without the dedication of our team.”

Looking ahead, he pledged a proactive, community-focused approach to service delivery. Noting that the MDLBS area spans urban and semi-urban zones, he urged councillors to be more attuned to grassroots concerns.

“We need to get on the ground and understand the issues. Many problems can be resolved earlier if addressed promptly,” he added.

Sempurai highlighted that while public expectations remain high, all projects must strictly follow established procedures.

He also noted that the recent increase in councillors’ allowances by the state government recognises their efforts but simultaneously calls for higher commitment and work ethic.

Enhancing community engagement will be a central focus in the upcoming term. Sempurai encouraged councillors to interact regularly with residents and foster a stronger sense of shared responsibility.

He acknowledged that MDLBS faces unique challenges due to its diverse jurisdiction and that meaningful improvements require time, understanding, and persistent effort.

“There are no quick fixes. Improvements take time and require a true understanding of the situation on the ground,” he said.

With community support and a dedicated council staff, Sempurai is confident that MDLBS can surpass its previous achievements.

His roadmap for 2026–2027 prioritises service quality, internal efficiency, and responsiveness to the evolving needs of the people of Sibu.
