BAU – Work to upgrade the drainage system in Kampung Sepadah will commence soon, with the objective of replacing the earth channels with concrete drains at three strategic sites.
The project, which was implemented under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) with a cost of RM180,000, was officially handed over during a brief ceremony at the site by Opar State Assembly Member Billy Sujang on Monday. The handing over of the project marks the beginning of the construction process.
According to local leaders, the project will see soil ditches in the village turned into concrete channels in three locations.
This is expected to ensure that water flows easily in the village during rainy seasons and prevent soil erosion that has been experienced in the village in the past few years.
During the ceremony, Billy Sujang appealed to the contractors and stakeholders to strictly follow the specifications and timeline of the project to benefit the residents.
“This upgrading project is very significant to ensure the well-being and safety of the villagers, especially during the rainy season. I hope the cooperation of all parties can ensure that this project goes smoothly,” he said.
The community leaders received the news positively, considering that the issue of poor drainage has been a regular occurrence during monsoon seasons.
The villagers had previously complained of water accumulation around houses and damaged footpaths and small roads following heavy rains.
The investment in RTP is part of a broader initiative by the state and local governments to improve rural infrastructure.
According to the government, the decision to construct concrete channels is a result of a balance between durability and maintenance requirements, which will lower the costs of emergency repairs.
The project managers will also be required to coordinate with the village committee and the Public Works Department to ensure that the works are carried out with minimal disruption. The measures to protect the vegetation and construction runoff will be included in the contractor’s brief.
The upgrade is also viewed as a preventive measure that could help reduce the cost of repairs in the future and enhance public safety.
Through the upgrade, the drainage capacity will be improved to reduce flash flooding and the associated risks.
The residents will be kept informed of the construction schedule and any changes to the temporary access.
The state assembly member stressed the need for cooperation from the community during the construction process, and urged the villagers to report any concerns to the project team.
The project in Kampung Sepadah is one of the small-scale infrastructure projects that are being implemented in the district as part of the RTP this year. The project is aimed at providing benefits to the rural community.
