SERIAN: As many as seven Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in the Serian Division are being upgraded as part of a proactive initiative to enhance disaster preparedness, particularly in anticipation of the Northeast Monsoon (MTL).
The announcement was made by Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, and State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Tarat, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, during the Merun Kasah Ceremony and MTL 2025 Officers Appreciation event on Friday.
He explained that the upgrading of these PPS facilities is aligned with the Sarawak Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure and supporting affected communities during emergency situations.
In addition, Dato Sri Roland revealed that a total of 55 disaster recovery projects have been proposed to the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), amounting to an estimated RM31.7 million. These projects involve rehabilitation efforts in flood-prone and disaster-hit areas, including erosion control, slope stabilisation, drainage improvements and tree-fall prevention.
“This disaster was particularly challenging as it coincided with the Chinese New Year celebrations. Yet, thanks to the prompt actions and coordination of all relevant agencies and local communities, the welfare and safety of residents were preserved,” he said.
Dato Sri Roland also commended the leadership of Serian Division Resident, Caroline Cleophas Joseph, who chairs the Division Disaster Management Committee, as well as district officers, local leaders, and corporate donors who offered aid during the MTL 2025 period which impacted over 2,500 residents.
“Their contributions are not only life-saving but stand as a testament to Sarawak’s unity and compassion in times of need,” he added.
In recognition of those affected, RM780,000 in Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) has been approved by JPBN Sarawak to be distributed to 780 household heads who were temporarily relocated to PPS from 28 January to 6 February 2025.
The ceremony also marked the symbolic closing of the Gawai Dayak celebration in Serian, attended by key leaders including Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben, MP for Puncak Borneo Datuk Willie Mongin, and ADUN Tebedu Dr Simon Sinang Bada.
