SPAOH – The Reselie Ujih Gendup Longhouse in Serudit B has celebrated its twentieth anniversary, marking two decades of significant transformation for its residents. The milestone event served as a testament to the impact of state-led development policies aimed at uplifting rural living standards through improved infrastructure and basic amenities.
The celebration took place on Saturday during a Merarau Ceremony, jointly organised by the local Women’s Bureau and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK). The gathering drew approximately one thousand guests, including political leaders, community elders, and residents, all coming together to reflect on the progress achieved since the longhouse was first established in 2004.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also serves as the Bukit Saban State Assemblyman, highlighted the tangible improvements witnessed over the last twenty years. He noted that the current state of the longhouse stands in stark contrast to conditions two decades ago, illustrating the effectiveness of sustained government investment in rural areas.
“Compared to the past, we can see very significant changes. This longhouse is proof that the development implemented by the government has brought progress and prosperity to the residents of Serudit B,” he said.
Uggah emphasised that these advancements were not accidental but the result of deliberate planning by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) administration. He stated that the government’s policies consistently prioritise the well-being of citizens, irrespective of their geographic location. The construction of sturdy, high-quality housing units was cited as a primary example of this commitment, with the Serudit B Longhouse now comprising 43 individual doors or family units.
During his address, the Deputy Premier urged the community to maintain their support for the current administration. He argued that continued political backing is essential to ensure that the development agenda remains on track, thereby securing benefits for future generations. He also took the opportunity to remind parents of the critical importance of education, encouraging them to utilise available government initiatives to secure better futures for their children.
The headman of the Reselie Ujih Gendup Longhouse expressed deep gratitude for the support received from the state leadership. He acknowledged the roles of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Uggah in facilitating these changes. According to the headman, the introduction of essential infrastructure has had a profound effect on daily life and economic productivity.
“We are very grateful to the Sarawak Government under the leadership of the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah as the Bukit Saban Assemblyman for all the developments that have been brought to Serudit B. Facilities such as roads, plantation roads and various other infrastructure have greatly helped improve the living standards and economy of the residents,” he said.
The provision of reliable clean water, electricity, and accessible road networks has not only eased domestic burdens but also boosted the agricultural sector. Better access to plantation roads allows farmers to transport goods more efficiently, thereby enhancing their income potential and overall socio-economic status.
Today, the longhouse is home to approximately 248 residents. Over the years, it has evolved from a basic settlement into a modern community equipped with the necessities required for a comfortable contemporary lifestyle. This evolution mirrors broader trends in Sarawak’s rural development strategy, which seeks to bridge the gap between urban and rural living conditions.
To further support the community, Uggah announced financial allocations during the ceremony. The Serudit B Women’s Bureau received RM30,000 to fund its activities, while an additional RM5,000 was allocated for each of the 43 room doors to assist with roof repairs. This direct funding aims to ensure the physical maintenance of the longhouse keeps pace with its growing needs.
Several other dignitaries attended the event, including Betong Member of Parliament Dato Dr Richard Rapu and his wife, Datin Lucy Mary Johnson. Also present were Roseline Mapong Sabai, Political Secretary to the Premier; Datu Richard Michael Abu Nawas, Betong Division Resident; Denny Lim, Spaoh Subdistrict Office Officer; and Natasha Nasa Uggah, the Bukit Saban PBB Women’s Head. Their presence underscored the multi-level governmental support directed towards rural communities in the region.
As Serudit B looks to the next decade, the focus remains on sustaining this momentum. The anniversary celebration was not merely a look back at past achievements but a reaffirmation of the ongoing partnership between the government and the people. With continued investment in infrastructure and human capital, the community is well-positioned to face future challenges with resilience and optimism.
