KUCHING – The launch of the Shenzhen-Kuching direct flight has been hailed as a milestone in strengthening economic, cultural and tourism ties between China and Sarawak.
At the official reception of the inaugural flight at the VIP Terminal of Kuching International Airport, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Weiping, described Shenzhen as one of China’s most dynamic and innovative cities.
He noted that the city, a key driver in the Greater Bay Area, is home to global technology giants such as Huawei, Tencent and DJI.
Xing highlighted that the new route carries special significance for Sarawakians who frequently travel to Shenzhen for both business and leisure.
“Kuching, as the largest city in Sarawak, offers rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. Today’s flight serves as a bridge between Shenzhen and Kuching, connecting not only our cities but also the hearts of our people,” he said.
The inaugural LoongAir flight brought 85 passengers from Shenzhen, welcomed by Xing alongside Datu Wong Hee Sieng, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS). The route, long anticipated since before the pandemic, is expected to boost tourism and business exchanges.
Xing emphasised that the direct flight will encourage more Chinese visitors to Sarawak, particularly as China-Malaysia relations strengthen under the visa-free agreement.
He noted that tourist arrivals from China to Malaysia are projected to surpass 5 million this year, driven by growing cultural and business exchanges.
He added that the new route will also enhance cooperation between Sarawak and Guangdong Province, given Shenzhen’s role as a hub for high-tech innovation and its upcoming role as host of the APEC Leaders’ Summit in 2026.
“This new route represents a great opportunity for China and Sarawak. We believe it will create lasting economic, cultural, and tourism benefits for both regions,” Xing said.
He expressed optimism that the successful launch of the LoongAir service would encourage more Chinese airlines to consider operating in Sarawak, further deepening bilateral engagement and positioning Kuching as a gateway for international cooperation.
