SIBU – The Sibu District branch of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) has successfully conducted a large-scale enforcement operation aimed at curbing substance abuse across the Sibu and Selangau areas.
The operation, known as Prevention Operation No. 10/2026, resulted in the detention of 13 individuals following a series of targeted raids last Tuesday.
A tactical team of seven AADK officers and personnel carried out the operation, which focused on several strategic locations identified as high-risk for illicit activity. The group detained consisted of nine men and four women, with ages ranging from 20 to 40.
Upon apprehension, all 13 suspects underwent preliminary urine screening tests. Every individual returned a positive result for Methamphetamine (syabu).
This enforcement action aligns with the recent amendments to the Drug and Substance Abusers and Addicts (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 [Act 283].
These legal changes mark a significant shift in the government’s approach, allowing the AADK to broaden the scope of its mandate.
Beyond targeting chronic addicts, the agency is now empowered to intervene at the “abuser” stage, allowing for earlier and more inclusive treatment and rehabilitation measures.
“AADK’s main focus is no longer just on enforcement aspects but rather on efforts to ensure that those involved have access to effective treatment programmes,” an agency spokesperson noted.
The agency is actively promoting its i-PULIH Model, a holistic rehabilitation framework that addresses the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of individuals. This model prioritises family involvement and community support to ensure long-term recovery.
In addition to its enforcement efforts, the AADK is urging the public to utilise its voluntary rehabilitation services.
The agency has provided guarantees that voluntary participants will receive treatment in a safe, confidential environment without the threat of legal repercussions.
These services are provided free of charge, aimed specifically at individuals determined to break the cycle of addiction.
Those seeking assistance or confidential advice for themselves or their loved ones are encouraged to contact the AADK toll-free hotline at 1-800-22-AADK (2235) or reach out via WhatsApp at 019-626 2233.
By encouraging proactive intervention, the Sibu AADK hopes to prevent substance abuse from escalating, providing a second chance to those seeking a healthier future.
