SIBU – The Sibu District National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) detected eight drug-positive drivers during Integrated Road Block Operation No. 5 of 2026, carried out on the night of 23 April.
The operation was conducted with the participation of 34 officers and personnel from AADK, the Sibu Branch Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Sibu Branch Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM).
The initiative was aimed at ensuring that road users, particularly drivers and passengers, were not under the influence of drugs that could compromise public safety.
AADK District Head, Azimah Marsid, was present to oversee the enforcement exercise. Throughout the operation, 30 individuals were detained for initial urine screening tests.
Results revealed that eight of them, comprising seven men and one woman aged between 19 and 50, tested positive for methamphetamine, commonly known as syabu.
All eight individuals were arrested under Section 3(1) of the Drug and Substance Abusers and Addicts (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 (DSA 1983).
The act emphasises not only enforcement but also treatment and rehabilitation, ensuring that offenders are provided access to rehabilitation programmes alongside legal action.
Officials highlighted that the operation reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement under Act 283 – DSA 1983.
The focus is on ensuring that individuals involved in drug abuse are not merely detained but also guided towards recovery through structured rehabilitation programmes.
AADK reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying detection operations against drug and substance abuse. In addition to enforcement, the agency continues to promote awareness through various platforms, including social media, to educate the public about the dangers of drug addiction.
The operation also saw the participation of Mohd Ariffin Zaini, Head of JPJ Enforcement Division, and Douglas Rundang, Head of JIM Enforcement Unit.
Their involvement underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding road safety and public order.
Community observers noted that the detection of drug-positive drivers highlights the ongoing risks posed by substance abuse on Sarawak’s roads.
The integrated approach taken by AADK, JPJ and JIM demonstrates a united front in tackling these challenges, combining enforcement with education and rehabilitation to protect the wider community.
