Double-Storey Workshops Catch Fire in Sibu’s Jalan Wawasa

Sibu Blaze Guts Workshops, BMW Burnt in Jalan Wawasan Fire

SIBU, 24 May 2025 – Panic broke out along Jalan Wawasan last night when two semi-detached double-storey workshops were engulfed in flames. The fire, which started around 8.30pm, triggered swift emergency response from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Sungai Merah).

According to Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Chief Andy Alie, the emergency call was received at 8.29pm, prompting an immediate dispatch of firemen to the scene. The first workshop, a permanent structure, was reported to be 80 per cent destroyed, while the second workshop suffered 20 per cent damage, mostly affecting the fibre layer of the roof.

In the blaze, a BMW vehicle parked nearby was also completely burnt, adding to the damage caused by the fire.

“Firefighters from both BBP Sungai Merah and BBP Sibu Sentral worked together to control the flames,” Andy said in a press release. “The fire was successfully brought under control, and the operation was officially declared over at 11.11pm.”

Fortunately, there were no casualties reported, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and estimate the total loss.

Residents in the area watched in fear as thick smoke rose into the night sky. Traffic along the road was partially disrupted while firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the situation.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures, especially in industrial and commercial zones where flammable materials are often present.
