SIBU – Police are seeking the public’s assistance to trace the next of kin of a man who was found dead at Lorong Pejalan Kaki, Jalan Tukang Besi, here last Saturday.
Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the discovery was reported to the Sibu Central Police Station at about 3.43pm after a call from the public.
“Initial investigation found that the deceased is believed to be an Iban man in his late 60s, known by the nickname ‘Uching Besi’,” he said in a statement today.
ACP Zulkipli said the man was homeless and had been registered with the Social Welfare Department. He also had a known history of mental illness.
“At the moment, police are trying to locate his next of kin. We hope members of the public who knew him or have any information about his family can come forward,” he added.
He said anyone with information should contact Sibu Central Police Station Chief ASP Binsin Lunjong at 017-8025675.
The police also reminded the public to be alert and help those in need, especially the elderly and homeless individuals in their community.
The deceased’s body has been sent to the Sibu Hospital for further examination and confirmation of cause of death. No foul play is suspected at this stage, but investigations are ongoing.
Authorities are urging relatives or acquaintances of the man to step forward immediately to assist in the handling of his remains and official arrangements.
This case highlights the ongoing challenge of identifying and reconnecting homeless individuals with their families, especially in urban areas like Sibu.
