SIBU – A Merdeka and Malaysia Day programme in Sibu brought together government representatives, community organisations and members of the public on Saturday in an effort to promote patriotism and raise awareness of national security.
The Merdeka Inspiration Programme and Malaysia Day 2026 were held at the Sibu Heritage Centre, featuring a range of activities designed to encourage community participation while highlighting the importance of unity, security and social harmony.
The programme was jointly organised by the Sarawak State National Security Council (MKN Sarawak), the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sibu Branch and the Sibu District Information Office.
Among the activities held were a Merdeka aerobic exercise session, a colouring competition, a Merdeka convoy and a visit to the Sibu Heritage Gallery. The programme combined recreational activities with messages centred on patriotism and civic responsibility.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Haffizie Putit, Director of State Security at the Sarawak State National Security Council.
In his address, Haffizie expressed appreciation to the organisers, government agencies, strategic partners and members of the community who contributed to the programme.
He also highlighted the theme of this year’s National Month, “Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati”, which places national well-being within a broader context than economic and physical development alone.
According to the message delivered during the programme, national well-being also encompasses unity, harmony, security and a quality of life that can be shared by communities across the country.
The programme also reinforced the principle expressed in the National Security Policy slogan, “National Security is a Shared Responsibility”.
The message emphasises that maintaining peace, security and harmony involves participation from individuals as well as institutions and government agencies.
Organisers said the patriotic spirit demonstrated through activities such as the Sibu programme should extend beyond national celebrations and be reflected in everyday community life.
This includes showing consideration towards others, acting responsibly, respecting people from different backgrounds and contributing to a harmonious local environment.
The event also provided an opportunity for participants to engage with Sibu’s heritage, with the visit to the Sibu Heritage Gallery forming part of the day’s programme.
Other guests included Lucas Lau, President of the Sarawak National Consumer Action Council; Zaini Morshidi, Sibu District Information Officer; and Siti Nurfatimah Hussen, Sibu Division Unity Officer.
The Sarawak MKN expressed its appreciation to the various parties involved in organising the event and supporting its activities.
The programme forms part of wider National Month and Malaysia Day activities aimed at encouraging public participation while reinforcing messages about patriotism, unity and shared responsibility for national security.
