Man Tested Positive for Drugs After Reckless Crash in Sibu

SIBU – A man seen driving recklessly and crashing into a motorcyclist in a viral video near SMK St. Elizabeth, Jalan Oya, has tested positive for amphetamine-type drugs.

Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident yesterday. Initial urine tests confirmed that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

“The one-minute and 29-second video circulating on social media shows the suspect intentionally hitting a motorcyclist before speeding away from the scene,” Zulkipli said in a statement today.

He added that during his attempt to flee, the suspect also struck several other vehicles in the area, causing further alarm among road users.

Police are now investigating the case under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. If convicted, the suspect could face imprisonment of up to five years, a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, and a driving ban for not less than two years.

In addition, the suspect is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 after testing positive for drugs. The offence carries a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both.

ACP Zulkipli also reminded the public not to spread unverified information or speculate about the case, as doing so could interfere with ongoing investigations.

“The police are taking this case seriously and will ensure that the investigation is carried out thoroughly and transparently,” he said.

The viral video has sparked outrage among social media users, many demanding stern action against reckless drivers who endanger others on the road. Police continue to urge motorists to drive responsibly and report any cases of dangerous driving to the nearest police station.
