SIBU – A new road project linking Teku Pasai Siong and Kemuyang is set to feature a 700-metre elevated segmental arch structure, which is targeted to become the longest of its kind in Southeast Asia when completed.

The structure forms part of the Proposed Upgrading Jalan Teku, Jalan Teku Pasai Siong and Jalan Kemuyang project in Sibu Division. The first package involves the construction of a new road between Teku Pasai Siong and Kemuyang.

Sarawak Public Works Department Director Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Is. Gs. Br. PMr. QPr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris inspected the project site on 7 October to review construction progress and the implementation of the works.

The package covers approximately 6.172 kilometres of new road built to JKR R3 road standards. Within that alignment, a 700-metre elevated section is being constructed between chainages CH2+570 and CH3+270.

The segmental arch will be one of the most prominent engineering elements of the project. Its construction represents an approach designed to accommodate the elevated section while delivering a new road connection between the two areas.

According to the project update, construction is currently progressing according to schedule, with completion expected in September 2027. The inspection by the Public Works Department was also intended to monitor whether implementation continues to meet the required quality standards and the established construction timeline.

The elevated section is expected to form an important component of the new road once the project is completed. By providing a dedicated connection along the Teku Pasai Siong to Kemuyang corridor, the project is intended to improve accessibility and strengthen movement between the surrounding communities.

Improved road connectivity can also support day-to-day travel for residents while providing infrastructure to accommodate future development. The project therefore combines a transport function with a significant civil engineering component.

The planned 700-metre structure also illustrates the technical demands involved in delivering elevated road infrastructure. Segmental arch construction requires careful coordination between structural design, construction sequencing and quality control to ensure that the completed structure meets engineering requirements.

For JKR Sarawak, the project provides an opportunity to apply specialised engineering techniques within a wider road development programme. The department’s site review is part of the ongoing oversight required to keep construction progress, workmanship and project delivery aligned with approved requirements.

The road is expected to strengthen the connection between Teku Pasai Siong and Kemuyang when completed. It is also intended to facilitate the movement of residents and contribute to local development by providing improved road infrastructure.

With the project scheduled for completion in September 2027, construction activity will continue through the remaining stages of the new alignment and elevated section. The final outcome will include the 6.172-kilometre road and its distinctive 700-metre elevated segmental arch.

The project represents another major infrastructure undertaking in Sarawak, combining a new transport link with an ambitious structural design. Its targeted regional record will ultimately depend on the completed structure and how it compares with other segmental arches across Southeast Asia. – Sarawak Daily
