SIBURAN – A state minister has emphasized the indispensable role of rivers for rural communities, calling for a collective effort to ensure their preservation.
Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister of Education, Innovation and Skills Development, stated that these waterways remain a fundamental pillar for cultural heritage, economic activity, and daily life, even as Sarawak advances in development.
He made these comments while officiating at the Community River Cleanliness and Landscaping Competition this past Saturday. The event was held in conjunction with the Sarawak World River Day 2025 celebrations.
Sagah noted that rivers provide essential services, functioning as crucial transportation routes and sources of livelihood, a tradition with deep historical roots.
The minister urged all segments of society, including individuals, families, and private organizations, to actively participate in safeguarding these vital natural resources.
He asserted that responsibility cannot rest solely with government agencies. The Kampung Stabut Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) was awarded first place in the competition.
Second place was secured by Kampung Simpok JKKK, with Kampung Senah Rayang JKKK taking third. A Special Award was presented to Kampung Pesang JKKK in recognition of its sustained dedication to river maintenance and beautification projects.
The ceremony was attended by several officials, including Sarawak Rivers Council Controller Lt. Col. (Retd) Ding Tiew Wong and Siburan District Officer Ranum Bari.
