Sibu’s First Pickleball Court at Catholic High School Boosts Sport Growth

Sibu’s First Pickleball Court at Catholic High School Boosts Sport Growth

SIBU – The construction of a dedicated pickleball court at Catholic High School marks a significant milestone in the effort to promote the fast-growing sport in Sibu. This makes the school the second educational institution in Sarawak to have a special pickleball court, following Riam Hill International School in Miri.

Bukit Assek State Assemblyman (ADUN) Chieng Jin Ek highlighted the importance of this development in encouraging more students to take up pickleball, a sport that is gaining popularity worldwide.

“This is a great achievement for the development of pickleball in Sibu. With this dedicated court, more students will have the opportunity to participate and refine their skills in the sport,” he said at the ring handing-over ceremony on Tuesday.

Expanding Pickleball to Schools in Sibu

Chieng further shared that the construction of the court is part of a broader initiative to introduce pickleball at the school level. As part of the first phase, 10 schools have been selected to establish pickleball clubs as a stepping stone for its growth.

Additionally, efforts are underway to organize Sibu’s first-ever inter-school pickleball tournament, expected to be held in September, pending approval from the Department of Education.

“We hope that more schools in Sibu will receive similar facilities in the future. This will not only allow more students to get involved in sports but also encourage a healthier and more active lifestyle among young people,” he added.

With growing interest and increased facilities, pickleball is set to become an exciting new sporting option for students in Sibu, further strengthening Sarawak’s position in nurturing young talent in the sport. — UKAS EDITION
