Motorcyclist Killed in Late-Night Crash on Sibu–Tanjung Manis Road

SIBU — A 31-year-old man was killed in a tragic accident along Jalan Sibu–Tanjung Manis last night after his motorcycle collided with an unidentified vehicle.

Sibu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili, said the fatal incident occurred around 9.30pm, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries.

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim was riding his motorcycle from Sibu towards Tanjung Manis. When he arrived at the location, it is believed that he lost control of his motorcycle and fell in the middle of the road before being struck by another vehicle, which has yet to be identified,” Zulkipli said in a statement today.

He added that the driver of the unidentified vehicle is believed to have fled the scene after the collision. Police are currently tracking down the vehicle and its driver to assist in the ongoing investigation.

Following the report, an investigation paper has been opened under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police have urged members of the public who may have witnessed the crash or have any relevant information to come forward. They can contact Investigating Officer, Inspector Lucy Ronald Jubang at 014-965 2109, or reach out to the Sibu Traffic Police Station at 084-338529.

Authorities are also reminding all motorists to drive carefully and follow traffic rules, especially during night hours when visibility is low and roads are quieter.

The victim’s body has been taken to Sibu Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem examination.

This latest accident adds to the growing concern over the number of fatal road incidents occurring in Sarawak, particularly involving motorcyclists on rural and trunk roads. Police continue to advise road users to stay alert and prioritise safety at all times.
