KUCHING – Sarawak-based sibling duo, SJ Borneo, has brought pride to Malaysia by winning the Gold Award in the music instruments category at the 17th International Art Performing Troupe 2025, organised by China Beijing CCTV Colorful Planet. The siblings, Shawn Thien and Jane Thien, achieved remarkable success, impressing judges with their distinctive musical style and cultural authenticity.
The competition was highly competitive, attracting talented performers from across the region. In July 2025, SJ Borneo advanced through the Malaysia Preliminary Audition, emerging as finalists among 350 contestants nationwide. By August 2025, they had performed at the international finals, captivating the judges with a performance that combined rich ethnic character and artistic excellence. Their unique fusion of traditional Bornean instruments—the Sape’ and the Djembe—with contemporary stage artistry earned them unanimous recognition and the prestigious Gold Award.
The award trophy and certificate were recently delivered to the siblings in Kuching, marking a moment of pride for both the artists and the Sarawakian cultural community. SJ Borneo’s music not only celebrates the traditions of Borneo but also introduces international audiences to the depth and vitality of Sarawak’s heritage. Their performances have been praised for successfully bridging cultural storytelling with modern musical presentation, making their art both authentic and globally appealing.
CCTV Colorful Planet is an esteemed international platform, bringing together youth art groups from around the world to promote cultural exchange and aesthetic education.
