SERIAN – Chung Hua Primary School (SJK) Serian has unveiled a new academic block and mini race track valued at RM3 million, marking a significant milestone in the school’s development.
The project also includes the creation of Confucius Park and the Liu Tzu Memorial Park, honouring philanthropist Liu Tzu, who donated the school site in recognition of his contributions to education.
The new four-storey academic block, comprising 12 classrooms, replaces the original block built in 1973. According to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, the modern facility is designed to support digital readiness in line with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.
“This new construction will give us the opportunity to equip schools with basic digital infrastructure to prepare for our economy as outlined in the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030,” he said in a speech delivered on his behalf by Education, Innovation and Skills Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn during the opening ceremony on Friday.
The Premier highlighted that more than half of the project’s cost was jointly funded by the Sarawak Government and the Federal Government, reflecting a strong commitment to education as a pillar of human capital development under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
He described the new facilities as a strategic investment to nurture a generation equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with digital and technical skills essential for Sarawak’s economic growth.
“Every spacious classroom and even the race track is a direct investment in creating a healthy and active generation. This is a space to sharpen the minds of students by encouraging interest in increasing knowledge,” he said.
The Premier also emphasised the importance of a conducive learning environment, noting that comfortable classrooms enhance focus and improve the quality of teaching and learning.
The race track, he added, would serve as a training ground to instil discipline, resilience, and teamwork among students.
“This is what is called balanced education,” he remarked.
Founded in 1931 by the local Chinese community, SJK Chung Hua Serian began with a single house and has since grown into a well-established institution. Today, the school boasts three academic blocks, a hall, a race track, and landscaped parks.
The opening ceremony was attended by Serian MP Dato Sri (Dr) Richard Riot Jaem, Sarawak Chinese Primary School Management Council President Datuk Jonathan Chai Voo Tok, Serian Resident Caroline Cleophas Joseph, Organising Committee Chairman Liew Toh Seng, and SJK Chung Hua Serian Education Officer Chung Phin Phin.
