Flood Relief Centre at SK Bukit Arip Selangau Closed

SELANGAU – The Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Arip, Selangau was officially closed at 3:00 PM on Monday, 12 January 2026, after flood conditions in the area returned to safe levels.

The PPS had been activated to provide shelter and assistance to residents affected by rising waters during recent heavy rainfall. With the situation now under control, evacuees have been able to return to their homes.

Local authorities confirmed that the closure reflects improving conditions in Selangau, though monitoring of weather and water levels will continue. The Civil Defence Force (APM Selangau) reminded residents that its hotline, 084-891285, remains available 24 hours a day for emergencies.

The PPS at SK Bukit Arip was one of several centres opened across Sarawak during the current monsoon season. Statewide, thousands of residents were displaced, with the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reporting more than 3,000 evacuees in temporary shelters earlier this week.

In Selangau, the closure of the Bukit Arip centre marks a step forward in recovery, but authorities emphasised that preparedness remains essential. APM Selangau reiterated its commitment to act “Ready, Fast, With Integrity”, underscoring its role in safeguarding communities during disasters.

Flooding has been a recurring challenge in Sarawak, particularly in low-lying districts such as Selangau. The state government has urged residents to remain vigilant and to heed warnings issued by the Meteorological Department, especially as weather conditions can shift rapidly during the monsoon.

The closure of the PPS demonstrates the resilience of local communities and the effectiveness of coordinated disaster response. Relief agencies continue to stand by to provide assistance should conditions worsen again.
