Flooding at SK Lepong Gaat Requires Urgent Action to Safeguard Student Learning

BALEH, 20 December 2025 – The recurring flooding at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lepong Gaat has raised serious concerns, with calls for immediate intervention to ensure uninterrupted learning, particularly for preschool students who are most affected during the rainy season.

Baleh State Assemblyman Nicholas Kudi Jantai said the school’s headmaster and teachers have appealed for the matter to be addressed by relevant authorities, stressing the need for a comprehensive solution to safeguard education in the area.

He explained that the headmaster has also requested the construction of a Rumah Arau, or hut, to accommodate parents of preschool students overnight.

This is necessary as preschoolers are not permitted to stay in the school dormitory, leaving families without proper facilities during flood-related disruptions.

“The attendance of preschool students has been unsatisfactory, especially when the rainy season arrives. I have asked the District Education Office (PPD) to hold further discussions to find a solution to the flooding issue,” Nicholas said.

He made the remarks during the 2025/2026 Academic Session Outstanding Student Appreciation Ceremony at SK Lepong Baleh on Thursday.

The event recognised the achievements of students while strengthening ties between parents and school staff.

As a gesture of support, Nicholas contributed RM5,000 to the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), despite the school having only 29 students.

He emphasised that the donation symbolised his commitment to ensuring the welfare of students and the sustainability of education in rural areas.

The flooding issue has become a pressing challenge for SK Lepong Gaat, with concerns that continued disruptions could affect student performance and long-term development.

Local leaders and educators hope that swift action will be taken to address infrastructure shortcomings and provide safer, more conducive learning conditions for the children of Baleh.
