SKAS Aid Launched in Kuala Rajang to Help Low-Income Families

SKAS Aid Launched in Kuala Rajang to Help Low-Income Families

Kuala Rajang: The Sarawak government has officially launched the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) programme for the N.41 Kuala Rajang State Assembly area, bringing financial assistance to low-income communities through a modern digital system. The launching ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Len Talif Salleh, during visits to Sarikei and Tanjung Manis on Friday.

The SKAS initiative is part of the Sarawak government’s ongoing effort to ease the financial burden faced by lower-income groups in the state. Under the programme, eligible recipients will receive financial aid in the form of digital vouchers that can be accessed through the SPay Global application. These vouchers are specifically intended to help families and individuals purchase essential food items and other basic necessities.

Speaking during the event, Len Talif highlighted that the programme reflects the state government’s continued commitment to supporting the welfare of the people. He stressed that the initiative is designed not only to provide financial assistance but also to encourage the use of digital platforms among Sarawakians, especially those in rural and semi-urban areas.

According to the state government’s guidelines, several categories of individuals are eligible to receive the SKAS assistance. These include households earning RM5,000 and below per month. Single individuals aged between 21 and 59 with a monthly income of RM2,500 and below are also eligible. In addition, senior citizens aged 60 and above are included in the assistance scheme, ensuring that elderly members of the community also receive support for their daily needs.

The distribution of the SKAS assistance will be carried out in stages throughout the year. As previously announced by the Premier of Sarawak, Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Abang Openg, the first phase of the distribution for 2026 began on March 10. This will be followed by a second phase on May 15, while the final phase is scheduled for November 10.

Len Talif also emphasized the importance of community cooperation to ensure the success of the programme. He urged local leaders, community representatives, and residents to help spread information about the SKAS initiative so that eligible individuals are aware of the assistance available to them.

He further noted that guidance and support should be provided to help recipients become more familiar with digital technology, particularly in using the SPay Global application. By improving digital literacy among the target groups, the government hopes to ensure that the assistance reaches those who truly need it and can be accessed efficiently.

The SKAS programme is widely seen as one of the Sarawak government’s key initiatives to safeguard the well-being of its people, particularly during times when many families continue to face rising living costs. With continued support and cooperation from the community, the initiative is expected to benefit thousands of Sarawakians across the state.

In conclusion, the launching of the SKAS programme at the Kuala Rajang constituency marks another step forward in the state government’s effort to care for the welfare of its people. Through digital innovation and targeted financial assistance, Sarawak aims to ensure that no community is left behind in meeting their basic needs.
