BELAGA – The Sarawak Government reaffirmed support for households with the launch of the Sarawak Consumer Goods Assistance Initiative in Belaga.
Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications and Belaga assemblyman Liwan Lagang said the programme reflects the government’s concern for families, single individuals, and the elderly facing rising living costs. He described the initiative as financial relief and reassurance for communities.
Speaking at the Belaga District SKAS 2026 launching ceremony, Liwan expressed appreciation to Sarawak Premier Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari for continuing the programme during a period of economic pressure. The initiative carries an allocation of RM640 million for eligible recipients across the state.
The assistance reaches recipients in stages during the year, starting early in the year, continuing mid-year, and concluding toward the end. Liwan encouraged beneficiaries to spend the aid carefully and keep savings where possible as living costs rise.
Recipients receive the assistance through the S Pay Global application. Residents unfamiliar with digital tools received advice to seek help from officers at the National Information Dissemination Centre, known locally as the NADI Centre. The centre also plans activities aimed at strengthening digital literacy in the community.
Officials from the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia delivered briefings during the event. Topics covered charitable basic contribution schemes, citizenship matters, taxation awareness, e-invoicing, and electronic services.
Service counters from the Inland Revenue Board, the Belaga Public Welfare Office, and the Belaga District Office assisted residents with SKAS enquiries.
A Rahmah Madani Sale also took place, offering daily essentials at lower prices to ease household spending.
Among those present were Senator Michael Mujah Lihan, Belaga District Officer Bidah Lujah, Kapit Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry officer Debbiana Enta John, Sarawak Revenue chief assistant director Ugak Nyun, and community leader Ajang Sirek, along with government officials and local leaders.
The smooth event reflected cooperation between agencies and the local community. The initiative strengthens social support and eases financial pressure for households across Sarawak.
