ASAJAYA — In a story that proves talent knows no geographical bounds, a group of students from SMK Asajaya have made their school and community proud by clinching three top awards at the Sarawak State Level National Robotics Competition held at Curtin University, Miri from July 16 to 19.
Despite being from a rural coastal town, the SMK Asajaya robotics team outshone their competitors, securing Gold and Silver in the STEM Robotics Invention Category, and Bronze in the Robosport Category. Their hard work, resilience and team spirit have now earned them the honour of representing Sarawak at the National Robotics Competition in Cyberjaya this September.
“We practised almost every day after school, sometimes until late at night,” said one of the team members. “It wasn’t easy, but all the effort paid off when we heard our names announced.”
Their mentors echoed the pride, highlighting that the students began with limited resources. “We started from scratch using mostly second-hand materials. What they lacked in tools, they made up for with determination and creativity.”
Organised by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) in collaboration with the Sarawak State Education Department (JPN) and the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), the competition aimed to nurture students’ STEM talents while fostering innovation and critical thinking.
SMK Asajaya’s remarkable win sends a powerful message—that with encouragement and opportunity, rural students can achieve excellence on par with their urban peers.
The team now sets their sights on Cyberjaya, carrying not only the dreams of their school but also the hopes of an entire community eager to see their children shine on a national stage.
“We are proud to be children of Asajaya. Pray that we continue to go further,” they said, filled with quiet confidence and hope.
