MIRI: To combat frequent flash floods affecting SMK Chung Hua Miri, a RM300,000 allocation has been approved under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2026 to upgrade the school’s drainage system.
The announcement was made by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism and Piasau State Assemblyman (ADUN) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, and was conveyed by his officer, Chia Kar Furng, during a site visit on Monday alongside officers from the Miri Public Works Department (JKR).
Chia explained that the site visit was conducted to assess the actual condition of the drainage system and gather input from the school’s administration on the challenges they face.
The review, attended by engineers from JKR Miri and school principal Lai Jia Ling, revealed that the school’s low-lying terrain and surrounding hilly landscape make it highly vulnerable to flash floods during heavy rainfall.
Under RTP 2026, the upgrading works will focus particularly on the rear section of the school, which serves as a major drainage route.
Proposed improvements include:
- Regrading the drainage slope
- Widening the current drainage capacity
- Reinforcing soil layers to prevent erosion and silt buildup
The drainage upgrade is expected to significantly improve water flow during downpours and reduce future flood risks at the school.
