KANOWIT – The newly completed structure of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kanowit has brought significant improvements to the school environment, though further upgrades are still required, particularly in laboratories and furniture.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the building during his visit on Wednesday.
“In terms of structure, I am very satisfied. Only certain equipment needs to be improved, and we will take care of this,” he said, noting that enhancements to facilities remain a priority.
Dr Annuar highlighted the school’s academic achievements over the past five years, pointing out that its Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) results have consistently surpassed the national average.
He added that the number of students achieving 5As and above was notably high, with more than 50 students qualifying for foundation programmes at Sarawak government universities.
He stressed the importance of guiding students in selecting Form 4 subject packages, particularly packages A and C, to align with higher education requirements in the state. Teachers and schools, he said, must provide adequate briefings to ensure students make informed choices.
During the visit, SMK Kanowit also submitted an application for new dormitory construction for boys and girls, as the current facilities are rated at condition scale 6.
Dr Annuar confirmed that the proposal would be reviewed to determine whether it could be included in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) or implemented through other channels.
The school’s transformation follows the Replacement Project of 18 Classrooms and Other Facilities, which began on 14 January 2023 at a cost of RM49.9 million.
The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and officially handed over on 5 November 2025, in a ceremony witnessed by Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The event was also attended by Ngemah State Assemblyman Anyi Jana, Machan Assemblyman Allen Siden Gramong, Kanowit District Education Officer Yakup Jai, SMK Kanowit Acting Principal Andrew Atan, and other dignitaries.
The new facilities have created a more conducive learning environment, but the call for further improvements reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring schools in Sarawak are equipped to meet modern educational standards.
