MIRI – The ongoing effort to reinforce public awareness on the ban of smoking in public areas has taken a proactive turn through the Mobile Service 2U programme, held on Saturday in Riam.
The initiative was organised by Parti Rakyat Bersatu Sarawak (SUPP) Senadin in collaboration with the Miri Division Health Office, targeting popular eateries and community spaces to engage with the public on smoking violations.
Leading the programme was Sarawak Minister of Transport and Member of the State Assembly (ADUN) for Senadin, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who emphasised the importance of engaging directly with the community to promote healthy and safe living habits.
“This hands-on approach helps us better understand the community’s needs while strengthening awareness on maintaining smoke-free public spaces,” he said.
A key part of the programme was the distribution and placement of “No Smoking” posters in high-traffic areas. The materials were sponsored by the Senadin DUN Service Centre, and the outreach was supported by two enforcement officers from the Miri Division Health Office.
According to recent statistics, over 1,000 compounds have been issued in Miri for smoking offences in prohibited areas. Under the Public Health Act 2024, offenders face compounds of up to RM250 for first-time violations, and a fine of up to RM5,000 if prosecuted in court.
In addition to public health education, the Mobile Service 2U initiative also serves as a platform for local leaders and councillors to engage with residents and address community issues.
Among those present were Cr Dato Victor Lau Sie Nguong, Cr William Sim, Kapitan Jee Kee Hiong, Jeffery Phang Siaw Foong, and SUPP Riam Small Branch Chairman Kueh Chie Tiong.
