Song District Sees Boost in Water Supply and Digital Connectivity

KAPIT – Song District is undergoing significant transformation as the Sarawak Government accelerates the rollout of water supply and digital infrastructure projects to uplift rural communities.

During a working visit to Song, Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi highlighted that several high-impact projects have been completed or are in progress, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring rural residents enjoy facilities comparable to those in urban centres.

One of the key milestones is the completion of the ‘Acute System’ Water Treatment Plant, valued at RM14 million. The facility, now fully operational, has a capacity of 4.0 million litres per day and directly benefits 1,400 households, including eight longhouses and a school.

Julaihi explained that the plant will also support the upcoming pipe extension and booster pump station project under the Ulu Rajang Development Agency (URDA), which is expected to expand coverage to more surrounding areas.

Several other major water projects are also in the pipeline. The Song–Kanowit Rural Water Supply Project (BALB), worth RM49.9 million, involves laying a 50.5-kilometre pipeline to serve 452 households. Meanwhile, the Proposed Song Water Supply System, estimated at RM30 million, will include a 14-kilometre pipeline, a pumping station, and a storage tank to strengthen distribution.

Additionally, a pipe replacement project from Rumah Nyantau to Rumah Jarop junction, covering 1.2 kilometres at a cost of RM1.04 million, is currently under tender evaluation. Once completed, it is expected to improve efficiency and reliability of water supply in the district.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the government is also prioritising digital connectivity. As of the third quarter of 2025, mobile internet coverage in Song has reached 76 percent, thanks to collaboration between the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Currently, 29 telecommunications towers are operational in the district, comprising 19 under the JENDELA initiative and 10 commercial towers. These facilities utilise a mix of fibre optic, microwave links and satellite technology to overcome geographical challenges in remote areas.

Julaihi stressed that these initiatives are not only about providing basic amenities but also represent a long-term investment in building a competitive rural community capable of participating in the digital economy.

The projects in Song are part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to modernise rural infrastructure, ensuring that communities in remote areas are not left behind in the state’s development agenda.
