KUCHING – Work at the SR06 ART station near Kuching International Airport is moving ahead, with several pier caps installed in recent days. The progress marks another step forward for Sarawak’s Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project.
The SR06 station is being built as an elevated facility, placed to serve travellers arriving at and departing from Kuching. A link bridge will connect the station directly to the airport terminal, making transfers between flights and public transport more straightforward.
Sarawak Metro, which is overseeing the project, said the integration with the airport is meant to make travel easier for both residents and visitors. The ART system is expected to ease reliance on private vehicles, cut congestion, and offer a more efficient way to get around the city.
The project is part of the wider Kuching Urban Transport System (KUTS), aimed at upgrading public transport across Sarawak. Once in operation, the ART will run hydrogen-powered vehicles on dedicated lanes, supporting cleaner and more sustainable transport.
With Hari Raya Aidilfitri approaching, Sarawak Metro also urged road users to stay alert. Traffic is expected to increase as families travel for the celebrations, and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid delays and stay safe on the roads.
The ART project has drawn positive responses as a major step forward for Kuching. By linking key locations such as the airport, residential areas, and business centres, it is set to improve connectivity and support economic activity.
Residents have expressed optimism about shorter travel times and a more dependable transport option. The SR06 station, in particular, is expected to serve as an important gateway for visitors, giving them direct access to the city’s transport network upon arrival.
As construction continues, Sarawak Metro said it remains focused on keeping the project on track. The latest progress at SR06 shows steady movement toward making the ART system a reality.
