State Secretary Inspects Simunjan Flood Relief Centre Operations

SIMUNJAN – The Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, recently conducted a high-level inspection of the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Balai Mesra Simunjan to monitor the ongoing welfare of residents displaced by seasonal flooding.

The visit, which took place on the sixth day of the centre’s activation, served as a strategic review of the humanitarian operations currently underway in the region.

As heavy rainfall continues to affect various parts of the state, the government has intensified its efforts to ensure that the logistical chain remains robust.

During his tour of the facilities, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar focused on the efficiency of the food distribution network and the general quality of the living conditions provided to the evacuees.

The primary objective of the visit was to verify that the initiatives launched by the Disaster Relief Committee are effectively meeting the immediate needs of the community.

The State Secretary spent significant time conversing with the displaced families to gauge their well-being and to ensure that medical and basic necessities were being supplied without delay.

He noted that the transition from homes to temporary shelters is often a distressing experience for families, making the quality of care at the PPS a top priority for the administration.

Expressing his professional appreciation, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar lauded the various rescue agencies and volunteers for their tireless commitment.

He highlighted that the successful transfer of residents and the subsequent management of the PPS were the results of a well-coordinated multi-agency framework.

He further emphasised that the Sarawak Government is dedicated to maintaining high standards of transparency and efficiency during natural disasters.

He stated that the prompt response by frontline workers has been instrumental in preventing further hardship for the local populace.

The visit also served as an audit of the communication channels between different government departments.

The State Secretary underscored the importance of clear, loud, and effective communication to prevent misinformation and to ensure that resources are deployed to the areas of greatest need.

Accompanying the State Secretary on this working visit were several high-ranking officials, reflecting the seriousness of the state’s disaster management protocols.

Among them were the Deputy State Secretary (Administration), Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua, and the Secretary to the Office of the Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK), Nur Alina Abdullah @ Colliner Gohe.

The delegation also included the Deputy Director of the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS), Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, and the Samarahan Resident, Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang, who also serves as the Chairman of the Samarahan Division Disaster Management Committee.

Local leadership was represented by the Simunjan District Officer, Sanuyah Mohamad, and the Simunjan District Police Chief, DSP Rafhan Kepli. Their presence highlighted the collaborative effort between state-level policy and local-level execution.

As the monsoon season progresses, the state authorities remain on high alert. The visit concluded with a reaffirmation that all necessary equipment and personnel are on standby to handle any escalation in the weather conditions, ensuring the safety and security of all Simunjan residents.
