KUCHING – The Sarawak Unity Education Fund (SUEF) has contributed RM100,000 to Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Terencat Akal (PERKATA) Sarawak, reinforcing its commitment to education and community welfare.
The donation was presented through a mock cheque by SUEF Chairman Datuk Richard Lee at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi on 11 February 2026.
The ceremony was witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, who also serves as the patron of the fund.
During a press conference following the event, Datuk Richard Lee emphasised the importance of supporting organisations such as PERKATA, which has been operating for over five decades to provide education and care for children with disabilities.
He noted that while the association receives some assistance from both federal and state sources, the funding remains insufficient to fully sustain its operations.
“We hope this contribution will encourage more parties to come forward and assist PERKATA in running its school for children with special needs, as this is a very meaningful and challenging responsibility,” he said.
PERKATA Sarawak, established 54 years ago, has played a vital role in offering specialised education and support services to children with intellectual disabilities.
The organisation’s work includes running a school dedicated to special needs education, which requires consistent financial backing to maintain facilities, teaching staff, and resources.
Datuk Richard Lee also urged more local companies and private entities to contribute, stressing that community involvement is essential to ensure the sustainability of PERKATA’s programmes.
He highlighted that donations and voluntary support remain the backbone of the organisation’s ability to continue serving vulnerable groups.
The Premier’s presence at the ceremony underscored the state government’s recognition of the importance of inclusive education and welfare initiatives.
By supporting organisations like PERKATA, Sarawak aims to strengthen its social safety net and ensure that children with disabilities are not left behind in the pursuit of education and personal development.
The contribution from SUEF reflects a broader effort to encourage corporate social responsibility and community-driven support for welfare organisations.
As Sarawak continues to prioritise inclusivity and education, initiatives such as this donation highlight the collaborative role of government, foundations, and private entities in uplifting society.
