MANAMA – His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim was accorded a full ceremonial welcome in Bahrain on 6 November 2025, marking a historic moment in Malaysia–Bahrain relations.
Upon arrival at Bahrain International Airport, His Majesty was personally received by King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, underscoring the close ties between the two monarchs.
The visit is the first official state visit by a Malaysian King to Bahrain since diplomatic relations were established in 1974, highlighting the significance of the occasion.
The welcoming ceremony at Istana Sakhir in Zallaq reflected Bahraini tradition and hospitality. Schoolchildren lined the route, waving the national flags of both countries, before a cultural performance featuring the traditional ‘Ardah’ dance was staged.
As Sultan Ibrahim and King Hamad proceeded to the Podium of Honour, the ceremony was marked by 21 cannon shots, followed by the playing of Malaysia’s national anthem, Negaraku, and Bahrain’s anthem. The formalities symbolised the strengthening of bilateral friendship and respect between the two nations.
Following the ceremonial welcome, the two leaders held an official meeting at Istana Sakhir, where discussions centred on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
Malaysia and Bahrain already maintain active collaboration through platforms such as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Gulf Cooperation Council–ASEAN framework, with bilateral trade valued at RM1.19 billion in 2024.
Later in the day, His Majesty visited the Martyr’s Memorial Monument, where he paid tribute to fallen Bahraini fighters.
Sultan Ibrahim recited Al-Fatihah and performed the symbolic act of sprinkling rose water, reflecting Malaysia’s respect for Bahrain’s sacrifices and heritage.
The state visit follows His Majesty’s earlier trip to Saudi Arabia, where he met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and discussed Vision 2030 reforms.
The Bahrain leg of the journey is expected to further deepen Malaysia’s diplomatic and economic ties with the Gulf region.
This visit also reflects the longstanding personal friendship between Sultan Ibrahim and King Hamad. King Hamad attended Sultan Ibrahim’s installation as Malaysia’s 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2024, while Sultan Ibrahim previously visited Bahrain in 2017 as the Sultan of Johor.
The three-day programme in Bahrain will include high-level talks, cultural exchanges, and official ceremonies, reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Gulf partners and advancing regional cooperation.
