Two Bridge Projects Improve Connectivity for Sungai Ilas

JEMORENG – The Sarawak Government has reinforced its commitment to rural development with the implementation of two bridge projects in the Sungai Ilas Longhouse area, Batang Igan, aimed at improving safety, connectivity and daily convenience for residents.

A ceremony was held to mark both the handover of a newly completed bridge and the commencement of another upgrading project.

The new project involves the construction of the 28-metre Longhouse Bridge and the 100-metre Raya Longhouse Bridge, with a total allocation of RM240,000.

These bridges will connect the parking area to the longhouses, providing safer and more reliable access, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions.

At the same event, a completed 75-metre bridge worth RM150,000 was officially handed over ahead of schedule.

The project was implemented by the Matu and Daro District Councils, with the handover witnessed by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) and Jemoreng Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya.

Dr Juanda highlighted that such infrastructure projects reflect the government’s ongoing concern for rural communities.

“The implementation of basic infrastructure projects such as this reflects the Sarawak Government’s continued concern in ensuring that the people, especially in rural and interior areas, enjoy safer and better quality facilities,” he said.

He emphasised that bridges are not only vital for daily movement but also play a role in supporting local economic activities by opening up land for development and improving access to essential services.

Residents of Sungai Ilas longhouses expressed their appreciation for the government’s efforts, noting that the improved facilities will ease their daily routines and enhance community activities.

The projects are expected to strengthen resilience in the area, ensuring that rural communities benefit from infrastructure development on par with urban centres.

The handover ceremony also involved contractors, tuai rumah (longhouse chiefs), and district officials, underscoring the collaborative approach taken to deliver these projects.

With the completion and initiation of these bridges, Sungai Ilas residents now look forward to safer travel, reduced isolation during adverse weather, and greater opportunities for local growth.
