KUCHING, June 10 — Police have arrested a 20-year-old local man in connection with an armed robbery case that took place along Jalan Song Thian Cheok here last month.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the arrest was made following investigations into a robbery report received by police on May 31, 2026.
According to him, the incident was reported at approximately 12.02am and involved an armed robbery that occurred by the roadside at Jalan Song Thian Cheok, one of the city’s busy areas.
“Acting on information gathered during the investigation, a police team successfully arrested a local male suspect on June 8, 2026, at about 11.45am,” he said in a statement.
Initial checks conducted by the police found that the suspect did not have any previous criminal record.
During the arrest, police also seized a white iPhone 13 mobile phone believed to have been used in the commission of the crime. The device has been confiscated to assist investigators in gathering further evidence related to the case.
ACP Alexson said the arrest marked an important development in the investigation and reflected the commitment of the police force in addressing criminal activities within the district.
Following the arrest, police applied for a remand order to facilitate further investigations. The Kuching Magistrate’s Court approved a seven-day remand against the suspect.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 395 and Section 397 of the Penal Code, which relate to armed robbery offences. Under the law, those found guilty may face a prison sentence of up to 20 years and may also be subjected to whipping.
Police have not released additional details regarding the circumstances of the robbery as investigations are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, ACP Alexson advised members of the public to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to improve security at their homes and properties.
He encouraged residents to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and alarm devices where possible. He also reminded the public to ensure that doors, gates and other entry points are properly secured, particularly during the night.
The police chief further urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities or information that could assist investigations.
