KUCHING, Feb 10: The long-awaited Sarawak-Singapore undersea electricity cable project is set to reach a significant milestone as discussions on its construction method are expected to be finalised by the first quarter of 2025.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that ongoing talks between Malaysia and Singapore are moving steadily toward an agreement. Once the discussions conclude, a conditional agreement will follow to kick-start this mega energy project.
“Currently, we are still discussing the method of constructing this cable. I expect these discussions to be completed in the first quarter of this year, followed by the possibility of signing an agreement between Malaysia and Singapore,” Abang Johari told reporters after his public lecture at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore.
The project aims to connect Sarawak and Singapore with a 1,000-megawatt (MW) electricity transmission cable. Abang Johari stressed that several technical aspects are being carefully evaluated, especially the procurement and installation process of the undersea cable, which is rare and highly specialised.
“There are only three such submarine cables in the world, and we must ensure everything is done meticulously,” he explained.
This project reflects Sarawak’s ambition to expand its role as a leader in green energy. By supplying renewable energy to Singapore, Sarawak is positioning itself at the forefront of regional energy cooperation.
Earlier discussions on the project were held during a bilateral meeting chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Among the distinguished guests at the public lecture were Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute Director Choi Shing Kwok, and Sarawak Climate Change Advisor Dr Angelia Liew San Chuin.
This undersea cable initiative is a crucial step toward a greener future, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to sustainable energy and strengthening international ties with Singapore.
