TEGAS Fuels Sarawak Talent at Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition 2025

PERAK – Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (TEGAS) played a pivotal role in preparing Sarawak’s best young rocketeers for the Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition 2025, held from 2 to 4 September at Felcra Seberang Perak.

The state’s representatives comprising the top three finishers from the inaugural Sarawak Rocketeers CanSat Challenge joined 68 teams and over 700 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines in two intense categories: a 1-kilometre rocket launch and the miniature satellite (CanSat) design contest.

TEGAS first introduced the Rocketeers CanSat Challenge in mid-June, hosting hands-on workshops on aerodynamics, launch mechanisms and timer programming at Hock Lee Hotel and Politeknik Kuching.

Fifty students from ten secondary schools across Kuching, Padawan, Samarahan, Serian and Bau took part, culminating in live model launches reaching heights of 120 metres at Politeknik Kuching.

Top honours went to teams from SMK Sungai Tapang, Sekolah Menengah Seni Sarawak and SMK Penrissen, all of whom advanced to the national stage.

At the national event, contestants demonstrated their problem-solving prowess under the watchful eye of judges from UiTM’s High Energy Material Research Laboratory (HEMREL) and MOSTI.

Participants navigated strict performance criteria from flight stability in the rocket segment to simulated payload deployment in the CanSat task while forging teamwork and creative solutions against a regional field.

By enabling Sarawak students to compete on this platform, TEGAS underscores its commitment to an inclusive, future-ready STEM ecosystem.

The agency aims to bridge the urban-rural divide in technical education and cultivate digital innovators who will drive Sarawak’s economic transformation.

This national exposure marks a stepping stone toward international arenas such as the Spaceport America Cup, aligning with the state’s long-term vision for its youth.
