MUKAH – Sharvel Iris Sebastian Umat emerged as the champion of Teluwaih Jinih 2026, the annual beauty pageant held during the Kaul Mukah Festival at Pantai Kala Dana on Friday.
The 22-year-old from Mukah triumphed over 11 other contestants, securing the top prize of RM3,000 and a trophy.
Her victory was further distinguished by winning the Teluwaih Jinih Photogenic 2026 title, cementing her position as the standout participant of this year’s competition.
The prize-giving ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Mukah, Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib, who congratulated the winners and highlighted the importance of cultural events in preserving community heritage.
The runner-up position went to Rohadatul Arissa Abdullah, who received RM2,000 and also won the Miss Charity and Best Catwalk awards.
Third place was awarded to Nurul Dhabitah Sebli @ Ramlee, who earned RM1,000 and the Miss Favourite title. Meanwhile, the Best Tatarias award was presented to Nuraisha Irdina Zulkirnain.
Teluwaih Jinih, meaning “beautiful woman” in the Melanau language, has been a central feature of the Kaul Festival since 2008.
The competition is designed to showcase both traditional and modern Melanau fashion, while also providing a platform for young women to demonstrate their talents, confidence, and communication skills.
The Kaul Festival itself is one of the most significant cultural celebrations for the Melanau community, attracting visitors from across Sarawak and beyond.
It serves as a vibrant display of heritage, with performances, rituals, and competitions that highlight the richness of Melanau traditions.
The Teluwaih Jinih pageant remains a highlight, drawing large audiences and reinforcing the festival’s role in cultural preservation.
Also present at the event were Balingian State Assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi, Tellian Assemblyman Royston Valentine, and Tan Sri Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, Chairman of the Federation of Sarawak Melanau Associations.
Their attendance underscored the importance of the festival in strengthening community identity and promoting cultural pride.
Sharvel Iris’s success reflects the growing recognition of young Melanau women in cultural and social platforms.
Organisers hope that the pageant will continue to inspire future generations to embrace their heritage while showcasing their talents to wider audiences.
